This cache is a continuation of the Shire Town series started by Redlights. It is a Multi-Stage/Puzzle cache that will take you to the orginal County Seat of Charles County in Port Tobacco and the current County Seat, La Plata. The final cache is a small cammoed plastic container just large enough for the log any a few small items, BYOP.
Port Tobacco is the original county seat of Charles County. The first courthouse was built there in 1729. In 1892, a vote was taken to see if the county seat should be moved from Port Tobacco. The vote did not pass, but soon after a mysterious fire burned down the courthouse and on June 4, 1895 the seat was moved to La Plata.
The present-day courthouse in Port Tobacco is a representation of the courthouse that burnt down in 1892. Please take some time to see the area surrounding the courthouse, there is alot of history there. The adjacent Stag Hall is said to have been the inspiration for Thomas Stone's house, Haberdeventure.
The Courthouse in LaPlata was constructed in 1896. It has had additions and renovations over the years to keep up with the county's growth. Behind the courthouse is the old county jail that was used from 1926-1981. It is now used as a holding area for the courthouse.
To find the final cache, you need to go to the coordinates listed on this page. There you will find a historical marker in front of a building next to the current County Courthouse that has a unique connection to both county seats. Read the sign to find out what that connection is, and to get your clues to find the final cache.
