Sagnet forteller at Steinkrossen ble satt opp til minne om Sigurd
Brynjulfson som druknet på Samlafjorden i 1303.
Sigurd Brynjulfson var kjent som ridder, riksråd og lagmann. Det
eldste nåværende huset på Agatunet sør for Utne, Lagmannsstova, ble
bygd av Sigurd Brunjulfson rundt 1250. Huset er i dag det eneste av
sitt slag i Norge.

English The legend
tells that the Stonecross was raised as a memory of Sigurd
Brynjulfson who drowned in Samlafjorden in 1303.
Sigurd Brynjulfson was known as a knight, King’s Councilman and
Magistrate in western Norway. Lagmannsstova, the oldest building at
Agatunet south of Utne, was build by Sigurd Brynjulfson
approximately 1250. Today, Lagmannsstova is the only of its kind
left in Norway.
