Geocache Description:

A good ole’ ammo can hide on an uninhabited island in the middle of the Cape Fear River! Kayak/canoe/raft will be your mode of transportation.

Welcome to The Island of Fire! This is a dredge spoil island which doesn’t actually have a name. We’ve asked all of Wilmington about this island, and no one knows what to call it. We thought that we would end up naming it “Deer Island” due to the large herd of deer that many locals have seen running around here, but our experience on the island involved a creature of a different sort. Yes - within minutes of landing on this island we inadvertently stumbled into large colonies of fire ants! This unfortunate incident caused a great deal of shrieking and embarrassing on-site wardrobe adjustment, and that is probably when all of the local deer hopped into the river and swam over to another island for some peace and quiet. So instead of “Deer Island”, it’s “The Island of Fire”.

Easiest access to the cache is available from the southern tip of the island. We recommend that you land your river-going vessel on the small beach that can be found here. You will be faced with a steep climb up a hill from here, and this will lead you to a rough cleared trail that will provide you with a really scenic walk along the top of the bluff. As you make your way to the cache, be sure to enjoy the sights and sounds of this unique place – when we were here, we were treated to a fly-by from a sharp-shinned hawk, a visit from a kingfisher, a bump from a dolphin (while paddling, of course), and the sight of several gigantic blue herons watching us with an unflinching stare from the marsh grasses. We know that there were all sorts of other creatures here who were just too shy to show themselves…maybe YOU will get lucky and spot that herd of deer! Just be sure to watch out for those ants.

Have a great adventure!

Congrats to wez2real for the FTF!!!
