Geocache Description:

La cache se situe sur la commune de Versailles dans le Parc Balbi.

ATTENTION : la cache n'est pas accessible 24/24H, 7/7J.

Le Parc Balbi est l’un des rares témoignages en partie sauvegardé de la vogue des parcs anglo-chinois de la fin du XVIIIe siècle en France. Il fut construit pour Anne de Caumont La Force, comtesse de Balbi, et amie du comte de Provence, frère de Louis XVI et futur Louis XVIII.
Cédant à la mode des pavillons de campagne, le comte de Provence fait aménager un pavillon et dessiner un jardin pittoresque par l’architecte Jean-François Chalgrin, en 1785. Le pavillon était somptueusement décoré et offrait le calme et une vue splendide sur le château. Il était entouré d’un jardin miniaturisé invitant au voyage, offrant une succession de tableaux naturels rehaussés d’une rivière serpentine, d’îles, d’espèces végétales raffinées, et d’un belvédère qui surmonte la grotte artificielle.
Le pavillon a été entièrement démoli par son nouveau propriétaire après la Révolution, les collections végétales ont été dispersées, mais on retrouve le tracé approximatif des allées et du plan d’eau. Quant à l’ensemble composé de la grotte surmontée d’une montagnette et d’un petit pavillon, il figure parmi les plus remarquables fabriques de jardin de cette période en France.
En 1907, le parc Balbi, affecté au grand séminaire de Versailles depuis 1844, est rendu à l’Etat. Son entretien est confié au Potager, et un passage direct est aménagé. Ils seront tous deux classés monuments historiques en 1926.
Fermé depuis la tempête de 1999 qui avait causé de gros dégâts, il a été réouvert en juin 2003 en partenariat avec la Ville de Versailles. Une étude est en cours afin de décider de la pertinence d’une restauration complète ou de l’opportunité d’une nouvelle création.

The hiding place is located in the commune of Versailles in the Balbi Park.
The Balbi park one of rare testimonys is partly safeguarded of the vogue of the Anglo-Chinese parks of the end of the XVIIIe century in France. It was built for Anne de Caumont the Force, countess of Balbi, and friend of the count de Provence, brother of Louis XVI and future Louis XVIII.
Yielding to the mode of the houses of countryside, the count of Provence makes arrange a house and draw a picturesque garden by the architect Jean-François Chalgrin, in 1785. The house was sumptuously decorated and offered calms it and a splendid sight on the castle. It was surrounded by a miniaturized garden inviting to the voyage, offering a succession of raised natural tables of a serpentine river, islands, vegetable species refined, and of a view-point which surmounts the artificial cave.
The house was entirely demolished by its new owner after the Revolution, the vegetable collections were dispersed, but one finds the approximate layout of the alleys and the water level. As for the unit made up of the surmounted cave of a montagnette and a small house, it appears among the most remarkable factories of garden of this period in France.
In 1907, the Balbi park, affected to the great seminar of Versailles since 1844, is returned to the State. Its maintenance is entrusted to the Kitchen garden, and a direct passage is arranged. They both will be classified historic buildings in 1926. Closed since the storm of 1999 which had caused large damage, it was réouvert in June 2003 in partnership with the Town of Versailles.
A study is in hand in order to decide relevance of a complete restoration or creation appropriateness new.
