The mighty legend of Paul Bunyan was created in 1906 in Oscoda. The tall tale was written by James MacGillivray and is based on the life of logger Fabian Fournier. Fournier, a French-Canadian logger was born in Quebec around 1845. He moved to Michigan and worked for the H. M. Loud Company. MacGillivray worked for the H. M. Loud Company years later and would hear stories told around the campfire about Fournier who had met with an untimely death when he was murdered in Bay City. MacGillivray sat down and wrote of these stories and Paul Bunyan was born. MacGillivray, who sometimes went by McGillivray, is buried in the cemetery overlooking the cache site.
