Geocache Description:

This cache is a small container containing a log and small has room for small trade items. It's located in a neighborhood park that has access from Highland or the adjoining street. The cache is a short distance off of a paved path.

The cache was placed in this area to highlight the Eramosa Karst area. A short description follows.
"Karst landscape is an area of limestone with underground drainage and many cavities and passages caused by dissolving rock. The Eramosa Karst is located in the former City of Stoney Creek in the City of Hamilton and is roughly bounded by Highland, Rymal and Upper Mount Albion roads and Second Road West. A portion of what is being called the Developed Area, extends north of Highland Road. A part of the Feeder Area, containing the headwaters of Kinney, Phoenix and Stewart creeks lies south of Rymal Road.
The Eramosa Karst contains examples of 16 different karst features. This karst type and the seven provincially significant features - including caves, dry valleys, soil pipes, solution shafts, sinking streams and overflow sinks - are not found anywhere else in Ontario within protected areas. The surface and groundwater drainage system that created the karst originated about 13,000 years ago, after the last glacier retreated in this part of the province. Today, the drainage system sustains the karst and provides examples of karst processes and features in different stages of development. It is believed that the Eramosa Karst is the best site in Ontario for teaching about karst features and processes. The diversity of features within a compact area, the simplicity of the developing karst systems, its location within the province's Golden Horseshoe, and the interest and support already expressed by landowners, the community and the province present both education and research opportunities. The Ontario government currently owns much of the Eramosa Karst Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI). The City of Hamilton, through its park system, protects some of the key features while the remainder is in the hands of private landowners, including developers. The ANSI designation by the province tells landowners that there are earth science features on their property that deserve protection and conservation through good land stewardship practices. Any future development proposals are asked to consider the recommendations for stewardship that accompany the ANSI designation. Source:MNR August 2003"
***UPDATE***HCA receives $1.5 million to build karst conservation area. November 9, 2006.Thanks to the Heritage Green Community Trust, Hamilton’s newest conservation area will be opened in 2008 as the cornerstone of Hamilton Conservation Authority’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The 180-acre Eramosa Karst site was officially transferred to HCA by the Province of Ontario on October 23, 2006. The Heritage Green Community Trust, formerly Taro Community Trust, will donate $1.5 million to pay for the development of the conservation area as well as some operational costs once the area is open to the public.
