Short walk In Coul Den Nature Reserve
Once a reservoir built in 1890 to supply Haig's Markinch and Wemyss Distillery, Coul Den was drained when the distillery closed. Now designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR), the den is owned and managed by Fife Council Community Services, primarily the Ranger Service based at Pitcairn. The site has been transformed since the dam was breached to form a shallow loch in 1989 . Since then, a car park, picnic tables, footpaths and pond have been installed and many native trees have been planted. Community and volunteer input has been significant with groups from the local community, Stratheden Hospital ,the Ranger Service and SAMH involved on an on-going basis. Coul has been used by Fife ATC Conservation Group as a site for participation in the John Muir Award Scheme. The site contains large areas of developing natural habitats, including willow scrub, herb-rich grassland and marshy grassland. Within these habitats are a variety of plants of local and national importance including Ragged Robin and Common Spotted orchid . Many invertebrate species thrive at Coul : the ponds provide an ideal habitat for dragonflies and damselflies.
Many species of ducks and a pair of swans can also be found here, along with red squirrel.
Parking can be found at N56.13.184 W003.10.671. There is a sign stating that the gates close at dusk, however there is street parking nearby.
