Geocache Description:

This recently refurbished park located between Blackhill and Consett town centre has a year round programme of events for all the family. The Cache is a nano and is situated at one of the original features in the park. Please remember to take a pencil.

Blackhill and Consett Park is important to Derwentside due to its historical links with the local steel industry, which dominated the area for over one hundred years, the Consett Iron Company was the largest employer in the district until its closure in 1980. The 'Company' gifted the space to its employee's and their families in 1891 as a contribution to their well - being.
The park was built on a hillside in order to take advantage of the spectacular views of the surrounding Moorland and countryside. Much of the Park was reclaimed from soil heaps from the local mines, evidence of which remains today. The space was originally designed and laid out by nursery Messer's Robson and Company of Hexham. Original features of the Park included a Fountain, a Bandstand, Tennis courts and a Pavilion.
The fountain has been lovingly restored and installed in its original location. The Bandstand had been removed but has now been recreated from photographs; the original drawings had not survived. The Tennis Courts over time disappeared but have been replaced with an outdoor stage and natural amphitheatre.
A comprehensive programme of events includes an annual Brass band season throughout the summer months providing a strong cultural link to the industrial heritage of the region.
The 'Steel Trial' an artwork commissioned by Derwentside District Council, designed by Andrew Mckeowan, interprets elements of the steel making process and a poem in steel enhances "The Wishing Stone" an original feature of the park.
The Park continues to play an essential role in the community providing strong links with the past and future generations.
