Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the old railway line which ran from the Caledonian Railway Station in Brechin to Edzell. It was build in the late 19th Century in response to tourist demands and closed to passengers in the 1930s before closing altogether (along with most of the UKs rural lines) in the 60s. The Brechin Station is still in use, and is managed by steam enthuasiasts, who run weekly steam excursions to the House of Dun in summer and at Christmas. The Edzell Station is now a private house but the architecture is still recognisable. Much of the line betwen the cache and Edzell Station is used as access by greenkeeping staff at Edzell Golf Club.

One interesting note is that Edzell had no electricity until the late 1930s. This was due to the refusal of the local landowner to allow poles on his land. (I suspect he also owned the gasworks!) When electricity did arrive it was along this railway line as the land was owned by the railway company and not the Earl of Panmure.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NEARBY WOODS ARE USED FOR PAINTBALLING AND NO PUBLIC ACCESS IS ALLOWED. The land used by the Bedlam Paintballing Company is generally marked with striped tape, but everything on the west of the road is theirs up to the middle of the woods. (Bedlam is a corruption of the Royal Bethlehem Hospital, which was London's main lunatic asylum.)
