Geocache Description:

Near the Freeway, Canal, & Horsepath

This cache is in a historic area where the old indian irrigation canals have been followed by the modern ones. There is now a freeway entrace here and an equestrian underpass, all crowded in together.

WATER
The life blood of this desert country. Water comes down from the mountain snows, then is held in reservoiors until it is slowly fed down the river to this canal, which carries the water to farms and homes as irrigation. This is the same as it was over a thousand years ago!

CARS
Today the area is flooded with cars and trucks flowing down the freeway. These connect to cities and ports all over America.

PEOPLE
People fill the cars trucks and busses on the freeway, but also there is a constant flow of people jogging, walking, horseback riding and just enjoying the beauties of this land along the canal.

HORSES
This trail connects the horse riders safely from the city to the trails and mountains of the surrounding area. Horses have been the main stay of transportation in this area much longer than cars, trucks, buses or planes.

FISH
I had to include fish since there is often someone with their string in the water. It may be children or adults just enjoying the thrill and relaxation of fishing. Most the fish in these waters today belong to the Salt River Project. They are Steryl Amour fish. Placed in the canal for the purpose of controling the alge and moss. Each year when the canals dry up for 30 days for maintainance, the fish are rounded up and taken to a storage facility waiting to be put back into the canal. SRP claims the cost of doing the Amour fish is about the same as chemicals and labor for moss control!

Now down to the the cache itself. Parking is a challenge. There is a small pull-off area on the west side of Gilbert Road just south of the canal bridge. You'll have to figure it out from there.

Please return the cache to the same place as it was. If you do it correctly, it is no work at all. You don't have to move any rocks. Just slide the container out and then back in.
