Votre visite vous permettra de vous promener le long du canal de
Carpentras - (Canal de Carpentras 1/2).
Louis Giraud, maire de Pernes et conseiller
général, avec les ingénieurs Conte et Perrier mènera ce projet dés
1849.
Le canal est financé par souscriptions, mais
celles-ci n’aboutissant pas, Louis giraud fait voter en 1851,
un impot exceptionnel de deux centimes.
Les terres irriguées doublent de surface - Le
fonctionnement se faisant par gravité, il valait mieux être du
“bon coté” du canal - d’où d’âpres
négociations sur le tracé.
Finalement, le canal est achevé en 1857,
permettant aux vergers du Vaucluse d’être parmi les premiers
en France .
