Lesson 1. Stopping to listen. This is where Birdin' and Trekkin' diverge in the approach to a cache site. Trekkin' wants to keep moving, log the find and get to the next cache, whereas Birdin' knows that in order to see a bird, she has to stop, wait and listen. As you approach the cache site, stop on the bridge and wait. You might not see or hear a thing, but if you give yourself time, the birds will forget you are there and show themselves. On the day this cache was placed, Ruby Crowned Kinglets, a White Breasted Nuthatch and Chickadees all responded to "pishing" and came close. A Barred Owl called back; Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers were drumming, an Eastern Phoebe posed nicely and one of Birdin's favorites, the Pileated Woodpecker, called and flew overhead, just as cache placement was finalized!
Without spoiling the find, I will only say it is not your typical container, with room for a log and pencil only. You may want to remember that sometimes to see birds, you have to crawl into the brush! Please check yourself carefully for ticks during tick season. Park at the lot accessed via County II, and be sure to visit "Inclined to Cache" and the "Bostwick Overlook" caches also placed in the forest.
