Geocache Description:

This cache is at the Black Gully Dam. Vehicle access is via Double Hill Road, off of SH1 just a few hundred metres north of Waitati.

The cache site is at a 8m high concrete dam that was constructed in 1912. Its purpose was to provide a water supply for the Seacliff Mental Hospital. A 16.5 km pipeline ran to Seacliff but the line was plagued by slips and land movement. Consequently, the scheme was abandoned in 1949.

Cache is a 1.5 litre snaplock hidden at ground level and not visible from any distance.

As you approach the dam a track leads off to the right. This takes you on a lengthy walk down towards Evansdale Glen and past timgrin's 'Walkways of Otago: Carey's Creek' (GC1J51C) and The Bohemian's 'Careys Reserve Minimalist Cache' (GC10ZKD).

A few metres further on a second track leads off to the left and heads to the cache and the top of the dam.

Beware of some drops near the dam (both at the base and top.)

Co-ords for the start of the track are given below. Climb the stile. Track is well defined. If wet it is likely to be slippery so wear appropriate footwear. A reasonably fit person should be able to do the round trip in under 30 minutes.
