Located in the heart of Holmes County Amish Country, this cache is placed on a site of historical significance to the history of the county.
This particular location is rich in history. The original 90-acre farm, in or about 1900, was the home of Honey Run Dairy Company and owned by farmer and cheese maker, Fred Gehrig and wife, Mary (Bigler) Gehrig. The 90-acre Gehrig farm was originally comprised of 30 acres on the corner where the Barn presently sits (and includes some of the land presently owned by The Inn at Honey Run), along with 60 acres on the east side of Township Road 319, going south, up the ridge. The Gehrig family which included twins, Clarence and Florence, and another son, Albert, made cheese and other dairy products which was sold from the basement of their house next door. The curing vats are still present in the basement of the house.
The original barn at some point deteriorated and was torn down and replaced by a second on the original foundation. The second barn was destroyed by a fire in the early morning hours of August 5, 1919 by a bolt of lightening during a severe storm. Soon after, the third and present barn was rebuilt, using some of the original beams from the second fire. Evidence of the fire can still be seen today in the hand-carved, exposed beams on the interior of the existing barn. Presently, the barn is operated as a bed and breakfast.
With this cache you can take in the beautiful surroundings and countryside and may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Amish neighbors traveling down the road. Towards the back of the property you can relax to the sound of Honey Run Creek and get in a bit of bird watching. Often the owners can be found on site as they are live-in innkeepers. Don't be afraid to say hello. You may even bump into my wife or myself since we do work on occasion during the week and during most weekends. You'll most likely see our cache-wagon, Katule. Please note this cache is only available during daylight hours and should be kept family friendly. It is large enough for geocoins and small to medium travel bugs as well.
1. Do bring a pen/pencil.
2. Do use the hint as it is the only means to which you'll be able to open the cache. Locked.
3. Bring a camera, as it is a very photo friendly surrounding, both on the way and the destination.
4. No, it is not in the field with the sheep or inside any of the barns.
5. It is approved by the owner of the site, my boss, so no worries.
This is one cache that will leave you relaxed and 'feeling good.' Be sure to tell the 'old man' hello when you visit, he usually hangs out around the barn.
