Bradley Woods Reservation opened to the public in the summer of 1962. At the time, this was the first new reservation opened in more than 30 years.
Bradley Woods preserves a portion of a once large stand of woods. In the early days of commercial aviation, pilots oriented themselves by this stand of woods, the only one of any size along the route between Cleveland and Detroit.
Early in the 20th century, several small quarries operated in Bradley Woods, and the massive formation of Berea sandstone that underlies the area can still be seen in the abandoned quarry sites. The quarries were in operation for more than 50 years.
Although the area was heavily lumbered in 1939, there are still some fine old sour gum, tulip, red maple, and sugar maple trees, species that can tolerate the wet conditions of this rare “swamp forest”. Wildflowers, ferns, and mushrooms flourish in the moist, rich, soil. Wild cranberry is also found here.
Bunns Lake, created in 1986 to provide a waterfowl sanctuary, is also a popular fishing spot. The 785 acre reservation also supports a large deer population.
While on this cache hunt you will see many signs of the past human use of what is now Bradley Woods Reservation. The final path to the cache is bordered by a small stone wall on one side at the beginning. If you see this, you know you are on the right path.
There are many ways to get to this cache. The recommended trailhead is at N 41 25.058 W 081 57.118. It is recommended you wear appropriate footwear while hunting this cache. Keep in mind that Bradley Woods can get very wet, especially after a heavy rain or snowmelt. Be prepared for some wet and muddy trails with the possibility of some standing water year round. If you come to a point where the most direct route to the cache is under water, look around for another trail. There is no need to wade through deep water. As always, please wear insect repellent in the warm weather months. The mosquitoes are especially numerous in Bradley Woods and several years ago there was a case of West Nile Virus reported from one of the surrounding residential neighborhoods.
