Wishmoor Cross 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Tom's Brother: Many thanks to Palika38 and Trevorthedog for reporting a "Didn't Find". I've checked the cache site today and, sure enough, it has gone.

The area is much more open than when the cache was first placed, so I guess that muggles have taken it.

Thanks to everyone who found the cache over the years and for all the kind words many have written. There are still some cachers left who say a little more in their logs than merely " found it" or "TFTC" or something equally terse :-).

Geocache Description:

This cache replaces the original Wishmoor Cross which was vandalised. The new cache is no more than a hundred yards or so away from it so the original information about the site is still valid.

The cache is placed on Bagshot Heath, part of the large area of forest bounded by Bracknell, Bagshot, Camberley and Crowthorne.

Bagshot Heath was a renowned haunt of highwaymen particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was a desolate and dangerous area. But, for those highwaymen captured by the authorities, retribution was swift… and local. Their rotting remains could often be seen swinging in chains here at Wishmoor Cross.

John Gay, who wrote the Beggars’ Opera, journeyed from London to Exeter in 1715 and wrote a poem about the experience. Of his passage through Bagshot Heath he wrote:

Prepared for War, now Bagshot Heath we cross
Where broken gamesters oft' repair their loss.

However, some travellers across the heath were not so badly treated. There is an old story told of the chivalrous French highwayman, Claude Duval in which he took only 100 of £400 from a certain party on the condition that the beautiful young lady, in the coach, dance with him.
