Welcome to Saline City in Sugar Ridge Township of Clay County. Saline City was founded in 1870, but the event for which this cache is named takes place 15 years earlier. The Wabash & Erie Canal ran through this area. To maintain water in the canal during dry times two reservoirs were built; the Splunge Creek Reservoir (4000 acres) and the nearby Birch Creek Reservoir (1400 acres, more than 2 sq. miles). The local farmers were unhappy about the flooding of this large amount of good farm ground and they believed that the reservoirs were malaria infested. Several times in 1854 and 1855, local farmers breached the banks of the reservoir. At noon, on May 10, 1855, a mob of armed men cut the Birch Creek Dam, thus draining the reservoir. This prompted Governor Wright to order two companies of the Indiana Militia under the overall command of Colonel Dodd to this area to protect the canal property. They were encamped in this area for the summer of 1855. With the coming of the railroad, the canal and the reservoir were abandoned and reclaimed. Nothing can be seen of the reservoir, but you can still find evidence of the canal in this part of the county.
When the railroad came through, Saline was a “booming” town. It had a post office, a doctor or two, a school, church, a stave factory, and a two story hotel.
Labor Day weekend will find the park full of people for the annual Saline City Poor Man’s Picnic. All entertainment is free, but may not be a good time for caching.
