Geocache Description:

*** Congratulations To Steviep F.T.F ***
The cache is located from the Trans Pennine Trail which is part of a disused railway line, so the ground is flat, but uneven and muddy at times. When you get to the steps, it is only suitable for walkers or cyclists. It can be reached from at lest 5 different foot paths. (Crematorium, St Paul Parade, Stairfoot Roundabout, Stairfoot Retail Park and the Ash)

Parking coordinates; N53 32.464, W001 25.940. Pull into retail car park. It will be best to park at the above coordinates as it’s closest to the road crossings.
From the parking area, cross the (A 633) by the traffic lights this is the safest way across that road, and turn left after the crossing, walk about 300yds to the gate for the Trans Pennine Trail, then follow your GPS to the Cache Site.
When you get to the wood go to the path with the stile into Hangman’s Wood there are also some signs at coordinates N53 32.408 W001 25.506. This is a public footpath that goes to the A635 also the crematorium. Happy hunting.

The cache box is a small lock type plastic container with the usual contents which we have exchanged from other caches we have done.

Hangman’s Wood is a spooky wood near Barnsley and is rumoured to have got its name from a man who was hanged and beheaded there in the Middle Ages. His body was buried away from his skull, and at night time he walks around the wood, uttering ghostly wails, trying to find his head..
There is also a Bat Cave in the woods which as been fenced off, so to provide shelter for the Bats, boxes have been fastened high in the trees, the only way into them is a small hole in the bottom of the boxes. This will stop birds from nesting in them. There are also a few boxes for Owls. 7 Benches have been provide for you if you would like to spend the night there (This would make a great night cache for the strong willed). Happy Hunting.

Hangman’s Wood Poem .

The wind is whispering, listen
The branches are singing
They tell me to look
A man is hanging

The wind is crying, listen
The branches are weeping
His eyes are closed tight
He might be sleeping

He moves in the breeze
Like a swing in the park
As the spidery trees
Blend into the dark.
