The recently completed bridge over the South River is one of the
longest pedestrian bridges in the southeast. It is fabricated using
cor-ten steel, which was developed to form a stable rust-like
appearance when exposed to the weather for a few years. It does not
need painting, saving thousands of dollars in maintenance costs
over the life of the bridge. It blends in well with the
environment. The most famous cor-ten steel bridge is the interstate
bridge over the New River Gorge in West Virginia.
At the end of the bridge, stairsteps lead down to the river and
to a natural sand beach. In warm weather, numerous turtles can be
seen sun bathing on the logs just upstream from the bridge.
Feel free to retrieve travel bugs or geocoins without need to
place anything in return.
