Geocache Description:

Experience a little of Tasmania’s bushranging history and see some great views of Eaglehawk Neck

Martin Cash was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1808. In 1827 he shot at a man in a jealous rage for making advances on his sweetheart and was sentenced to seven years' transportation to New South Wales. He arrived in Sydney in 1828. On receiving his ticket-of-leave he was suspected of cattle duffing (rustling) and fled to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) where he was sentenced to jail and hard labour for stealing farm produce. Cash and two others escaped from Port Arthur and formed a bushranging gang. He was then involved in another romantic dispute over his wife in Hobart and shot a policeman. For this crime he was sentenced to life imprisonment on Norfolk Island where he was considered a model prisoner and was given a pardon in 1853. He returned to Hobart and died a respected citizen in 1877.

During one of his escapes from Port Arthur, Cash used this lookout to spy upon the dog line and the detachment of military guards stationed along Eaglehawk Bay, before swimming across the narrow bay to freedom.

To get there, you have two options:

Option 1
Park near S43 01.288 E147 55.419. Nearby is a sign, "Cash's Lookout", directing you up a sealed driveway at the end of which there is another “Cash’s Lookout” sign (low to the ground) indicating the start of the walk. The track is marked with orange triangles in the early stages of the walk, and afterwards, with plastic tape and cairns. After a few minutes walking, you will arrive at a T-junction in the track. Take the track to the right. The walk should take 30-50 minutes (plus 20-30min to another nearby cache).

Option 2
About 2.5kms west of Eaglehawk Neck, turn off the Arthur Highway onto Pirates Road. After 3.4kms, turn left at Plateau Road and drive 5km to the carpark at Hang-gliders lookout (incidentally, there is another cache here).
Walk down the path towards the hang-gliders lookout to S43 01.897 E147 55.097. The start of the track to Cash’s lookout isn’t obvious, but it begins at the last right hand bend before reaching the gliders lookout itself. On the lower side of the large gum tree on the bend is where the track to Cash’s lookout begins.
The track from here to Cash's lookout is easier than Option 1, but the track is not well defined and has some fallen trees to negotiate. There are coloured plastic ties and the odd cairn to guide you though. A fairly easy 20 – 30min walk.
