The intent of this multi cache is to give the cacher a walking tour of a couple of old bridges in Blackfoot. The Bridge Street Bridge was built in the 1930's! This bridge offers a walking path which is built onto the west side. We think that walk decks on bridges are a modern day thing! The other bridge built at the turn of the century services the railroad.
The older of the "twins" is the Railroad Bridge. It was built by the American Bridge Company in 1916! This bridge services rail traffic to the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Arco, and North. The Oregon Shortline Railroad serviced the area at the time this bridge was built. The main railroad travels on the East side of the Snake River and eventually crosses down river from St. Anthony. While at the final cache box you have the opportunity to make a closer inspection of the Railraod Bridge. Note the date cut into the top member of the bridge directly over the tracks. Also note the no tresspassing signs! During the flood of 1997 the Highway 26 bridge just up stream was in peril. Flood waters had touched the bottom of the concrete beams spanning the river. As the river continued to rise water began to be dammed up by the bridge. The view downstream was reminiscent of standing on the stern of a ship looking aft while underway. The river boiled out on the downstream side, the whole structure vibrated, and traffic was not allowed to cross. The younger of the twins saved the day on its 61st birthday! This old bridge was the only means of crossing the Snake River near Blackfoot. The tops of its piers stood proudly above the flood along with those of its "twin" the Railroad Bridge. These are still working bridges at 91 and 71 years old! They stand as a compliment to their designers and builders. To obtain the coordinates to the second and final cache box you will need to get information from the younger bridge! Imagine the tales this old bridge could tell...You will find a card in the cache box at the above coordinates that will help you "converse" with the old boy!
