This area is part of Palm Springs History.

Some quick facts:

In 1928, the El Mirador Hotel opened as a gigantic facility, able to host 300 guests.

Opening in 1928, El Mirador was one of the most fashionable resorts of its day, catering to movie stars and captains of industry. When the U.S. entered WWII in 1941, the hotel was purchased by the federal government and converted into Torney General Hospital, treating wounded soldiers. After the war, the hotel reopened, but the easterly portion of the property became a community hospital. The hotel closed permanently in 1973 and Desert Hospital was built where the hotel once stood. The main hotel building and its tower remained standing, however, until destroyed by fire in July 1989. This accurate reconstruction was completed in May 1991.

Palm Springs was filled with soldiers and visiting families. Torney General Hospital and Ferry Command turned the village into a year-round resort. Though food rationing was a handicap to many hotels and restaurants, customers were satisfied. Night life, however, was a bit limited because of the blackout. (A little known, but interesting, piece of history: Torney General Hospital housed a large number of Italian war prisoners who worked as orderlies and at other jobs around the facility. A happy lot, they had been taken prisoners in the Libya campaign and were thoroughly adjusted to the desert climate.)

Today Desert Regional Medical Center is a large Trauma facility that offers many different services.
