Geocache Description:

The Levisa Devil

I remember during the hot summers, when I was young. I would often spend the night with my cousins. Since my grandmother lived next door, she would often tell us stories of her childhood. Many past down from one generation to the next. Some of the stories were of course loosely based on fact and others were, well…… who knows where they came from.

One story that I remember was of the Levisa Devil, sometimes known as the Millard Monster. This story was told to us, usually late at night as we all were in bed, trying to fight off sleep. It was rumored that a devil monster lived under a wooden bridge and roamed the river banks around the levisa fork of the Big Sandy River around where Millard Elementary School is currently located. Travelers late at night would often vanish leaving only their scared horse and wagon running in terror as if the animal had seen a devil. Search parties would often only find pieces of clothing, a child’s shoe or bonnet and nothing else. It was said that when the train bridge was built to service the coal tipples along the way, that the train’s engines scared the Levisa Devil away for a number or years. But since the train rarely runs in that area now, it is rumored mind you, that the Devil has returned. Some say that on a dark night, sometimes with a full moon, one can park their car next to the now concrete and steel bridge, turn off all of the lights, take the keys out of the ignition and place them in the back seat of your car. Then all that you have to do is wait and listen for the devil. He will come shortly.

I remember while going to Millard Elementary in the 70’s, that it was famous as an Indian burial ground. When the school system pulled in two mobile home type classrooms that are still located next to the bridge and river bank. We use to play in the mounds of dirt that was left after the buildings were finished. We often found bits of pottery, shells and even bones. Looking back now, I wonder if the bones that we found were what was left of the Levisa Devil’s victims?

Look across the river from the cache site and you can see the classrooms and the so called Indian Burial Ground.

Good Luck! You will need it!
