Trails From Rails - Rabbit Warren Halt Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Clova: There is a new fence in place stopping access to this area as it is a sensitive area for plants. The ranger has now caught 3 sets of cachers climbing the fence and cutting through the area so has requested that the cache is archived.

Geocache Description:

This cache is set along the former Arbroath and Forfar Railway.

The line opened in 1839 and by 1848 a portion of it was part of the main line to Aberdeen from the south, via Forfar. The line had to be re-gauged to become part of this network. The Forfar to Guthrie section of the line remained open after the closure of the line as a through route. Today a short portion of the line remains between Arbroath and St Vigeans Junction.

Continuing along the line you will come to Rabbit Warren Halt. When setting the cache we found several owl pellets and what looks like an owl box in a nearby tree. Slightly further along we found several pelts/bones/feathers as well as what looked like a turkeys foot. Definitely something big feasting on the animals around here - Black Panther of Balgives??

With grateful thanks to the Scottish Wildlife Trust for their permission to place this cache and the others in the Balgavies Loch area.
