This cache is set along the former Arbroath and Forfar Railway.
The line opened in 1839 and by 1848 a portion of it was part of
the main line to Aberdeen from the south, via Forfar. The line had
to be re-gauged to become part of this network. The Forfar to
Guthrie section of the line remained open after the closure of the
line as a through route. Today a short portion of the line remains
between Arbroath and St Vigeans Junction.
The marshy ground to the west of Rescobie loch made it necessary
for the railway to be raised along an embankment here. When we set
the cache, we passed this Green lagoon and just had to set a cache
here.
Thought you might also want to know what a railway embankment is
made of so have given you the opportunity to find out!!
