Summit Stones, a
series of caches hidden in Summit County cemeteries.
This cache is hidden
at the Old Hudson Township Burial Ground, also known as Chapel
Street Cemetery. Entrance is found on Chapel Street, right off of
Route 91 in Hudson. Easy to get here from anywhere.
Welcome to the oldest
cemetery in Summit County. Founded in 1808 by David Hudson, founder
of the town, and Benjamin Whedon. Cemetery is located near the
grounds of the Western Reserve Academy, but it is owned by the city
of Hudson.
David Hudson,
interestingly, is the great grandson of Henry Hudson, the great
Dutch explorer of, the now named, Hudson Bay and the Hudson
River.
The first person
buried here was Ruth Brown, who just so happened to be the
notorious abolitionist John Brown's mother. Yes, that guy who
attacked Harper's Ferry in West Virginia and helped bring on the
Civil War with his public advocation of insurrection!.
Other notable burials
here are four Revolutionary War veterans. They are PVT Jonathan
Draper, SGT Joel Gaylord, PVT Stephen Thompson Sr., and his son PVT
Stephen Thompson Jr.
PVT Stephen Thompson
Jr. was a drummer boy in the war according to his white granite
headstone. He also served in the war of 1812. How cool is that?
We've never seen a headstone marked "Drummer Boy". We bet it'll be
your first too.
Just don't come here
to find this micro cache, take some extra time to look around at
the history buried here. Very interesting and we know you'll enjoy
it.
Cemetery is open dawn
to dusk, daylight caching only. Show your respect here and watch
your step. We hope you enjoy your visit.
