Geocache Description:

I grew up in Berlin near the high school and I spent a great deal of time playing on or around Mt. Jasper with my friends.

Mt. Jasper, in its heyday, was visited by indians at least every few years and as much as every season. They visited the crest of the mountain to collect a stone called rhyolite which was a good material for making flaked tools such as knives, scrapers and arrow heads. The indians stayed in the area only long enough to manufacture new tools needed and then would leave for the camps to the north along the Androscoggin River. About 100 feet below the top of Mt. Jasper is the principal excavation area "small cave" that can still be accessed and viewed, however, collecting artifacts or taking anything other than litter is forbiden. Exhibits of some of the artifacts found can be seen at the Berlin Public Library. For more information on the history of Mt. Jasper, please visit the Berlin Public Library or visit (visit link)

Parking can be found in the high school parking lot off of Madison Avenue. Near the parking lot located above the running track is the begining of the trail. Go up the trail and you will eventually come to a "Y" in the trail. If you go left at this "Y" you will follow a runoff stream for a ways. Then watch for a trail crossing this runoff stream and take another left (in the summer this stream may be dry). Follow this trail to the top. Another "dryer but slightly longer" route is to pass by the "Y" in the trail and go to a second "Y" in the trail. Go left and follow the trail until it comes to a "T" and then go left again. Follow this to the top. The cache is located near the top.
