Operation Spitfire Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

jonnyt: i wanted to convert this from a multi as the place the final point is in is now subject to muggling and not as nice as it was, i also appreciate that people dont like multis as much. It was first placed as such to avoid a nano but as i have put more out now which arent nanos i feelless guilty :-).

Mark II will be published but it will be in the same place as the first stage of the previous one.

Geocache Description:

Was a multi cache near the life size replica Spitfire erected in recognition of Thornaby's aviation history.

The replica spitfire was dedicated on April 1st 2007 (the 89th birthday of the RAF). With attendance from veterans, air cadets (including JonnyT) and local residents.

The letters on the side of the spitfire are the code letters of the 2 squadrons which flew spitfires from RAF Thornaby. RAO-B were the post war code letters of the North Riding Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force who flew spitfires from Thornaby from 1948 to 1950.

Call sign letter B-Bravo signifies Bader School.

YO-T were the wartime letters of the Royal Canadian airforce squadron who flew spitfires from Thornaby aerodrome in the Spring of 1943.

There is roadside parking near the cache location. There is Bader School, named after and opened by Douglas Bader the famous legless pilot, nearby so extra care should be taken at school start/finish times.

This part of Thornaby 'new town' was built on the site of the old aerodrome and many of the road names have an aviation connection e.g. Mitchell Avenue named after RJ Mitchell who designed the spitfire. Indeed the information board shows how the runways mapped onto modern roads.
