Geocache Description:

A Pink Floyd series cache!

I was initially going to make this three separate caches. At the start of this series, I honestly didn't realize the number of albums that I was going to run into and this series was getting a bit lengthy. So I am combining the last three into one cache. I really "DEW" want to wrap up everything here, knowing that I have completed the story of Pink Floyd.

There is one more thing that I want to mention about this cache. This cache is placed nowhere special. While it is hidden, it was not placed in this specific location for any particular reason, like the other 23 caches in this series were. I did this for a reason that some might see as "odd". (It was symbolic I guess more than anything.) Placing this cache differently than the others and placing it in a place for no particular purpose sadly mirrors the life of Syd Barrett. He didn't spend his years in the great spotlight of Rock & Roll. He didn't get the type of recognition that the rest of Pink Floyd did. He lived his life VERY differently than the other band members did, as you will soon read.

This cache is about the three "eras" of Pink Floyd. I am listing them backwards, as I want to finish with Syd Barrett. My reasoning is simple. This entire series of caches that I set up is my personal tribute to Syd Barrett.

Also, I want to mention two men that also made Pink Floyd the outstanding band that they are: Nick Mason (Percussion) and Richard Wright (Keyboards). These two outstanding musician/performers/writers went through many of the trials that this band went through as well. Rick Wright was forced out of the group during "The Wall". They have gone through every trial and tribulation, every triumph and defeat, and every loss and gain.

(A SAD UPDATE: A spokesman for rock group Pink Floyd said Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 that founding member Richard Wright has died after a battle with cancer. He was 65.)

DAVID GILMOUR
David Gilmour is an unbelievable writer, musician, performer, band leader and has certainly gained my respect over the years.

As leader of the band from about 1985, Gilmour didn't let the band "dissolve" the way Waters had designed. He was, and many would argue - still is - one of the greatest guitar players in the world.

He led the band through "Momentary Lapse of Reason" and brought the band from the some of their darkest days to one of the best bands of the modern era. He is currently still leading the band, as well as enjoying a decent solo career.

ROGER WATERS

Roger Waters held the baton of "leader" in this group for roughly 17 years.

In June of 1968, Waters found himself as the front man for Pink Floyd, and lead the band through many successful releases.

It was to be a very bitter break-up in 1985, when Waters "dissolved" the band. Many people assumed that this was coming, as Waters and Gilmour had very different ideas about which direction the band should go in, and Waters felt it would simply be better to "give it up" and go on with his solo career.

The last album that he was a part of was dubbed "The Final Cut" and was released in 1983. He would later attempt to sue Pink Floyd over copyright infringements and for use of the name "Pink Floyd".

SYD BARRETT

Roger Keith Barrett, ie. Syd Barrett, Was the founder and originator of "The" Pink Floyd, in February of 1965.

Syd had a style of music that grew in him that no band had ever played, heard, or designed. In my eyes, Syd was a musical genius.

Syd had some severe problems that developed early into Pink Floyd's success. Unfortunately, most of his problems were self-inflicted. Syd found solice in the drug "LSD". He was not someone who handled success well either and the pressures of this instant rise to popularity was too much your Syd's mind to handle. Syd Barrett's guitar playing was replaced by David Gilmour, while Roger Waters took control of the band's leadership.

From 1968 to 2006, a total of 38 YEARS, Syd Barrett lived as a recluse in his mother's home in Cambridge, England. He was seldom seen in public, never owned a driver's license, and kept in very little contact with the outside world. He remained in Cambridge and on June 7, 2006, he died peacefully at home from complications of diabetes. He was 60 years old.

True musical talent is a gift. Anyone can be taught how to read music. Many people can be taught to play a guitar. Some people are self-motivated enough to teach themselves. But the actual balance of making true music isn't taught, or learned - it is a gift.

Syd had a gift. A gift for a type of music that had yet to be created. He WAS the founder of the psychadelic music era. Perhaps it was the self-induced problems of chemical dependency that took Syd from us or maybe it was the overwhelming pressures of trying to fill a true void in what was the current time of music in that generation. It could have been a combination of both.

I can tell you this: It is the "Syd Barrett"s of this world that fill our days with all the music that we share daily - of EVERY kind. So, Shine On You Crazy Diamond!
