Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden off a rural road that has a bit of history… or does it There is a small spot for one car to park, and the cache is a short walk away. Watch out for the typical creatures in this type of rural setting, ticks, snakes, etc. There is a pen in the cache, but bring one just in case.

You know the type… “A friend of a friend knew this guy that dated this girl that had this brother…. Etc.” Most urban legends are based on folklore. Some kids get together and try to scare the pants off one another by making up a story about something they claim happened to them.

This particular story is one that I heard when I was growing up, and decided to go out on a couple of occasions to see if it was real or not. Here is the story I was told…

When I was in High School, there was always talk about a “haunted” street nearby, Dyer Lane. As story goes, over 70 years ago a family lived out in the country off of Dyer Lane. At some point the mother went crazy and killed her entire family. Legend says that the woman buried her children on her property. Of course, nobody seems to know what happened to the woman, but many claim that late at night you can hear the laughter and cries of the lost children.

Many people also claim that this area is haunted by victims of a certain group that allegedly held meetings out in this area. I had once been told that an active group was still in these parts, and if you drove down this street and spotted a white shirt hanging from a fence post then to turn around. (I never saw such things) Some say that if you are in this area on the night of a “meeting” then a white truck would chase you away. (Note: as far as I know, the local Police Departments could never prove such activities in this area.)

There have also been rumors that since the ghosts can not cross water, then as soon as you turned off of Dyer Lane heading south and crossed Dry Creek you would be safe.

So, is this all fact or fiction. The true history of this area, or the workings of creative minds????

I (in a younger, not so bright moment in time,) decided to head out to Dyer Lane in the middle of the night with some friends. We drove slowly along the road, and while I will admit it was eerie since there were no street lights, a low fog, and a full moon, we still continued on. At one point one of them said to stop the car since they thought they spotted a light off in the fields. I pulled over and we all went to the front of the car. We could hear what could have sounded like laughter… or it could have been the wind. We climbed back in the car and drove further down the road. We were very hyper-sensitive to our surroundings due to the stories we had heard. We reached the first turn and as we rounded the corner the headlights shined across something that appeared to be a body. We slammed on the brakes and got out to investigate. (I guess we thought we could help or something..) Turns out it was just garbage that some jerk had dumped off the side of the road. PHEW! By this point we decided it was all a myth and to just turn around and leave. We swung the car around and headed back towards Watt. Not 10 seconds after we rounded the turn, a vehicle was right on my bumper. Now, I don’t care if it’s legend or not, but when someone just appears out of nowhere on your bumper, you get a little scared. (especially when you are 17! ) I gunned the engine and drove as fast as we could until we got off that road. We hung a right onto Watt with the vehicle still right on my tail. Just as we crossed the creek the lights were gone.

We were a little freaked out about the vehicle that followed us so we pulled into the closest gas station and got out to talk about it. (Of course I was still a little shakey, so I wound up hitting one of those white poles used to keep people from hitting the pumps, but I digress. ) As we stood around the car talking about what had happened we notice markings on the rear window of my car. They almost looked like little hand/foot prints.

Now….. I was young, and I was very scared that night, so I had a lot of questions…

Were the sounds we heard REALLY the lost children, or was it merely the wind

The vehicle that tailgated me the entire way back… was it a ghost that couldn’t cross the water Or merely some angry farmer that didn’t like the looky-loos that wandered near his street late at night

The marks on my rear window… were they really a sign of ghostly behavior… or simply the antics of one of my friends trying to scare us that night

Now that I am older I believe this is all legend. I have found nothing provable about anything I have ever heard about this street. Riding down this road to hide the cache, I didn’t hear any children’s laughter… didn’t see any white trucks… nothing. Then again, it was the middle of the day. Hmmmm
