This cache was originally placed as part of the (Grid 34) Geocaching Poker Run event
held in Galeton on May 12th, 2007. You will need to bring your
own pencil/pen.
This site was originally the location of a tavern called the
Kilbourne House, built by Major John M. Kilbourne in 1860. It
burned to the ground immediately but he rebuilt it that same year.
The rebuilt house was a station on the "Underground Railroad",
harboring escaped slaves who had ventured up Pine Creek on their
way to Canada. Many people in the area found slavery to be
unacceptable and supported the passing slaves quietly and secretly
since slave hunters frequented the area hunting run-aways. A
tombstone found in the basement serves as the unique address plate
on the front of the store.
