Geocache Description:

The first of a series of caches placed on or near the site of deserted cotswold villages.

These villages were thriving communities 700 years ago but now there is little left to be seen.

So what caused these villages to be abandoned?,well they seemed to suffer a sequence of blows over several decades.
A series of poor harvests led to poor corn yields which in the 1270s and 1280s was made worse by outbreaks of sheep scab. Then over the next 40 years the royal tax demands were steeply increased and this was followed by more disastrous harvests in the early 1300s.
The final blow came with the 1348-9 outbreak of plague, the black death, which swept through Europe killing something like 25 million people. It sounded the death knell for these farming communities.
