Geocache Description:

This cache marks another Historical site for Wodonga there are two sites very close together and you will find the cache between these two sites;

The site of John Woodlands home.

John Woodland came from England in 1839. He was elected the first Shire President of Wodonga in 1876. The year after he took the office of Shire Secretary and served in this capacity for almost 40 years.

Subsequently, his daughter Mrs Rose Murphy who appears to be the first Woman appointed a municipal clerk in Victoria served the Wodonga municipality for another 20 years.

In the early days the shire had little money to pay an engineer so they dispensed with his services and John Woodland became Engineer, Secretary, Clerk of Works and Rate Collector. For this he was paid £12/1/8 per month. John Woodland had no means of transport to get around the shire so he walked, even to meetings in Yackandandah.

The Green Hills School.

This is the Site of the first school in the area.

Before the school could open and a teacher commence duties, the Government had to be assured that a minimum of 20 children would attending.

The School was built of round timber, slab walls, bark roof, dirt floor and shuttered windows.

The school opened in 1850 and closed in 1870.
