Geocache Description:

These coordinates mark the entrance to Geelong’s Eastern Cemetery, where maccamob's one hundred and twenty sixth cache invites you to take a tour. As you explore the grounds, you will discover some of Geelong’s well-known historical figures, as well as some interesting and unusual examples of grave architecture.

The tour takes you to up to 12 locations, from most of which you will be able to see one or more of the distinctive memorials shown in the accompanying photographs. To make things a little more interesting, at a small number of the locations you will find none at all. As you identify each of the pictured memorials, answer the accompanying questions to find the cache.

Among the interesting people whose memorials you will see are:
Charles “Chas” Brownlow, for whom the Brownlow Medal was named;
Thomas Chirnside, builder of the Werribee Park Mansion, once the hub of an 80,000 acre property;
Captain Foster Fyans, who was Geelong’s first police magistrate, responsible for siting the Geelong township, and inaugural Mayor;
James Harrison, founder and first editor of the Geelong Advertiser, editor of The Age, inventor of the first commercial ice-making process, member of Geelong’s first town council, and MLA for Geelong and Geelong West;
Reverend Andrew Love, after whom the Cancer Centre at Geelong Hospital has been named, was Geelong’s first Presbyterian minister and presided over the marriage of Foster Fyans to Elizabeth Alice Cane; and
Hugh Niven, whose burial service was the earliest recorded here.

You can find out more about most of these interesting characters online.

The Cache.

The cache is hidden at S38° 09.(J3-K)(B-J2-1)(1+A+G-L), E 144° 22.(H-C)(A)(F-J1-12). You are looking for a micro container, so BYO pen. Please take a moment to reseal the bag to keep the log dry, ensure the cache replaced exactly where you found it, and is not visible to other passers-by before you leave. Some stealth may be required when others are nearby.

For a bonus point of interest as you leave, go to S38° 09.D0K, E 144° 22.GL7, where you will find a small sandstone monument to Henry. His unfortunate death was undoubtedly the first of many to follow in subsequent years from similar causes. The graphic design across the top of the headstone is relevant.
