Geocache Description:

Located 3 miles South of Andrew on Secondary Highway 855.

St. John Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Sachava). The congregation of this church originally started across the road at St. Michael's Russo-Greek Orthodox Church. In 1920, they formed the first organized Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Alberta. Also in 1920, they had the first Divine Liturgy celebrated by the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Alberta. In 1924, however, supporters of the Russian Mission pressured the Ukrainian Orthodox followers to start construction on a separate church across the road. St. John's Church was not completed until 1935 due to financial contraints.

The really interesting thing about this church for me was in the cemetary. At the front of the cemetary (East side overlooking the highway) is a large grave, the type covered over with concrete. At the front of this grave is what appears to be concrete doors leading into the ground. I assume it leads to a set of steps going down to a crypt type place under the aforementioned grave. If any of you can shed some light on this for me, please email me or add it to your comments. Very interesting!
