Coney Island is situated at the mouth of Sligo Harbour, sandwiched between Rosses Point to the North and Strandhill to the South. It is said that Sligo's Coney Island gives it's name to New York's Coney Island. This came about when a Sligoman by the name of Captain Peter O'Connor, Master of the Schooner "Arethusa", which plied between Sligo Harbour and N.Y. over 200 years ago named NY Coney Island after Sligo's Coney Island which lay one mile from his Sligo home. The latin origin for Coney Island is "Oilean na gCoinini" ...."The Island of Rabbits". The Island is approx 1.5 miles long by 1/4 mile wide. Getting to this cache involves a bit of planning. You may access at low tide from "Last Stop Before Coney" Cache on the mainland. The route across is marked by a number of large concrete marker posts all the way over to the Island's shoreline. You are advised to follow these markers. Upon reaching the shore turn right and follow the shoreline to two large white concrete pillars which mark your access up onto the Island's only road. The distance from the mainland is 2.5 km and you may drive, run, cycle, horseride, walk etc. The closest parking place to the cache is at: N54 17.972 W008 35.624.
The cache is in a small tablock box with room for small swops only.
Enjoy the Island and brillant views and be safe with your crossing.
