Geocache Description:


Memorial Park in Sewickley has always been one of the Elves' favorite parks. In fact, it's the home of the very first cache we hid, way back in 2002 -- Elves in the Forest. It's a big park, and over the years, a few more caches have been added. Our second contribution is at the extreme opposite end of the park.

If you visited this park before for our other cache, you'll be pleasantly surprised upon your return visit. Memorial Park now features one of the coolest high-tech playgrounds in the area. With the rich Sewickley tax base, they really went all-out with a park improvement project that began in 2006. Your kids will love this playground! But did we hide a cache right at the muggle-infested playground? Nope -- lots of folks don't like that type of cache hunt.

Instead, we wanted to share our memories of the *old* playground with you. At the far end of the park near the Sewickley YMCA, there was a very nice "traditional" playground, with a towering metal slide, a huge swingset, a jungle gym and what Little Lep called a "dizzy-go-round." It's where I took Little Lep to play when she was little. If you fell down here, you'd get muddy and maybe scrape your knee. If you fall down on the new playground, you bounce off the safety-engineered artificial surface. How DID we survive before high-tech playgrounds?

Up in the woods, there's a nice trail that runs along the perimeter of the park. Near its beginning, we hid our cache, which is a camo duct-taped plastic jar. It's a short hillside scramble to give you a view of what used to be "our" playground. Now, most of that space is taken up by a new platform tennis facility. Enjoy your visit and imagine all the fun which generations of Sewickley kids used to have at the now-forgotten playground. Close your eyes, and maybe you'll hear my young daughter's laughter.
