Geocache Description:

Our teacher recently introduced us to geocaching. Not only do we geoocache with her after school, but many homework assignments were designed around this activity. This is the fourth in our Homework Assignment series.

Our recent homework assignment was to research a promininent artist with ties to Indiana and then to present the information to our class. The artist I, J.T. Rocket Hunter, selected is one of this country's most popular artists. He is known for his underwater paintings. The artist I researched is Wyland. He wants to inspire people to become more aware of the struggle of whales, dolphins and all ocean life and does so with his works of art. In 1981, he set out to paint 100 underwater paintings (Whaling Walls) on public buildings in 100 cities. His plan was to complete them by the year 2011. He has already completed 95 of them.

Wyland's 74th painting brought him to Indianapolis in 1997. The Indianapolis Public School's Educational Service Center Building was the location chosen for his Orca's Passage Mural. The mural is a Northwest seascape. You can see the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. The work of art includes sea otters, whales, and dolphins playing in the ocean. An eagle soars overhead. I remember when he started painting the mural. Teachers brought their classes to watch as he painted. We learned about saving whales and ocean life while we watched Wyland paint. I thought the Whaling Wall looked weird at the time, but now I enjoy looking at it as I drive past on my way downtown.

Come enjoy this special piece of art. Cache placed with the permission of the IPS Facilities Manager.

Don't forget to bring a pencil so you can complete your homework assignment. School pin for the FTF.
