Geocache Description:

Jim Reeves dam held water back on the waterway from Two Island Lake to Corning’s Lake, Digby County to power a sawmill. It is felt that the mill and dam were built no less than eighty years ago so that would put it in the mid to late 1920's.

Jim Reeves was quite a tinkerer and inventor. He had a workshop down by Corning’s Lake where he made knives for people and had something of a blacksmith shop. He had cut a Model-T engine in two and made a pair of two cylinder engines out of it. One powered a line shaft, which ran his blacksmith shop. He had a windmill on the shop, which turned a dynamo and charged a string of batteries, which were used for lighting.

The co-ordinates bring you to the old stone dam wall, from where you can see the remnants of the mill machinery on the other side of the stream. The ground is extremely soft and muddy in spring and after heavy rains. As you look about, imagine the work involved in moving the thousands of huge stones required, not only to build the dam, but also to channel the water through it. This stonework extends under the bridge and out to the end of the channel at Corning’s lake.
