Parkhead Station marks the 100 mile point on the C2C (Coast to Coast) cycle route (assuming you're heading west-east). The station was part of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway, opened in 1834 to transport limestone from the quarries above Stanhope in Weardale and coal from the various collieries in North Durham to South Shields. Its consulting engineer was Robert Stephenson. The station house, which fell derelict following its closure in 1965, has now been renovated as a B&B and tearoom. The cache is situated on the old railway track, now part of the Waskerley Way, north east of the station in the direction of Consett and Sunderland. There is parking and excellent refreshment at Parkhead Station (N54.78303 W1.99731). The walk/ride from the station gives superb views over the moors and nearby Waskerley Reservoir. You may see moorland birds such as snipe, wheatears, meadow pipits. curlew and red grouse.
