Geocache Description:

Davis Field, Jackson, Mississippi's first airport. Davis Field is now known as Hawkins Field. You are looking for a matchsafe. You do NOT need to go on airport property. I suggest you go in the day-time.

In February 1928, 151 acres of land were purchased for the sum of $53,500 to open Davis Field, Jackson, Mississippi's first airport. Davis Field is now known as Hawkins Field. Delta Air Lines' inaugural flight was in 1929. In June of 1941, Hawkins Field was designated as an Army Air Base. The facility was used as a pilot training center through January 1949, at which time it reverted to civilian aviation status. It served as Jackson’s main airport until 1963. In 1963 a new military and commercial air facility known as Allen C. Thompson Field (Jackson-Evers International Airport), was dedicated in Rankin County. It is a shame that such a beautiful place has been allowed to decay to this state. Visit the Hawkins Field Fact Sheet by Clicking on this link: (visit link) .
