Tinker to Evers to Cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Blue Man: Unfortunately, the final cache location has become compromised. The cache is missing and the location is not generally accessible. Maybe I will try again later but it seems as if most new geocachers are not up to this kind of challenge.

Geocache Description:

When I first began caching, there were a number of caches in the Orlando area that stood above all the rest. These caches were all placed by The BIRD. Sadly, The BIRD (AKA Jim Phillips) stopped geocaching shortly after the death of his daughter and devoted his efforts to other areas. Jim died in February, 2006, and will be missed by many people in all walks of life.

I have attempted to recreate one of Jim's caches, hidden in cahoots with da Begal, that was stolen shortly after being placed in September, 2002. I always hoped that it would be replaced but it never quite happened. I hope that my tribute will give all the newcomers a glimpse into the mind of one of Orlando's best. There is history here, in more ways than one.

The cache description below is reproduced in its entirety from The BIRD's original listing. However, the current cache is a camo-taped decon container and contains a variety of trinkets. Please replace it carefully so it can't be seen by those walking nearby.

"Tinker to Evers to Chance"-Words every baseball fan has heard, but did you know there is an Orlando connection? First meet the boys and the poem that made them immortal:

Chicago Cubs double play combination from 1903-10;  SS Joe Tinker (1880-1948), 2B Johnny Evers (1883-1947) and 1B Frank Chance (1877-1924); all 3 managed the Cubs and made the Hall of Fame and were immortalized in poem by New York sportswriter Franklin P. Adams:

"Baseball's Sad Lexicon"
These are the saddest of possible words:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance."
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double--
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance."

The term "gonfalon" refers to a flag or pennant, and Adams uses the phrase "pricking our gonfalon bubble" to describe the repeated success of the Chicago Cubs and their celebrated infield against their National League rivals, his beloved New York Giants. A note from The Bird-This was perhaps the last time the Cubbies were ever repeatedly successful at anything! Rebuttal from da Begal- "Your comment regarding the Chicago Cubs is inaccurate.  They have been repeatedly successful at filling the stands!"
.

In 1920 Joe Tinker came to Orlando to manage the Orlando Gulls baseball team. He also began to speculate in real estate and over the years made (and lost) several fortunes. In 1925 he constructed a building to house his bustling business. The building also housed a pool hall and a Singer Sewing Machine company store. The Tinker Building was restored in 1979 and is now occupied by a law firm.

In 1923 the first incarnation of Tinker Field was built. The last renovation occurred in 1963. Many minor league teams have played here over the years, affiliations include the Devil Rays, Cubs, Twins, Dodgers, Senators, Tigers, and Mariners. Tinker Field has also served as spring training home for the Twins, Cubs, Dodgers, and Senators. Many of the greatest baseball players of all time have played here. A notable exception is Joe Tinker!

In celebration of the great sport of baseball The BIRD (Braves Fan) and da Begal (Rabid exCub fan and new defending world champion Arizona Diamondback fan) have placed a cache near Joe Tinker's namesake. To find it you must first visit the grave and office building pictured above to gather the necessary information to pinpoint the "Tinker to Evers to Cache." The cache is in a genuine da Begal 2 qt Rubbermaid jar with a green seminole (oops! I mean gator) smiley face, wrapped in a black trash bag and containing baseball items. Including:
.

The Fergie Jenkins Travel Bug Assorted Cubs baseball cards- Take
1960 Fleer Joe Tinker baseball card     a Cubbie, leave one of your guys.
1992 Tops Gold Doug Dascenzo card    The BIRD left John Kruk-he still
    makes me laugh!
If you remove Fergie from the cache we ask that you take him to a baseball game, any baseball game, before passing him on. While not required, The BIRD and da Begal think it would be "Cool" if you only traded baseball related items.
