Established in 1973 by Mr. L.M. Stone, the South East Rock Farm has been the most successful venture of its kind in the world.
Following the very mild Autumn of 1973, small stones were seeded amongst the vines in an attempt to grow stones and rocks of assorted shapes and sizes for the domestic market. In the years following the establishment of the farm, similar programs were commenced all around the world, but none were ever as successful as the one in Naracoorte. Soon after its first plentiful harvest, the SE rock farm became a leader in breeding technologies, something that is still true to this day.
So successful has the program been that some of the stones you can see today are direct descendants of the original plantings.
