Come on folks! Has geocaching turned into a roadside hobby? Is there really something spectacular about that spot 50 feet off the road? Let's get off the beaten path and see why fellow geocachers are leading us to these places. I promise you there is definitely a scenic reward for finding this cache!
Driving Directions:
Get on US 287 north of West Yellowstone, MT. Just west of the 18 mile marker, turn north onto FS 681-Red Canyon Road. This is normally a good road but can be quite muddy after a recent rain. Park at N 44 50.203, W 111 12.226.
Hiking Instructions:
Take the old logging road/trail to the west (not the main road). You should pass a sign for the Hebgen Mountain trail and a gate within the first few yards. While it is possible to bushwack and save a little bit of distance, it is not recommended. The easiest and most scenic route is to follow the main path as it meanders to the top. Figure a MINIMUM of 4 hours for the round-trip hike.
On a clear day you will be rewarded with views of Hebgen Lake, Yellowstone Park, and several mountain ranges, including the Tetons.
Precautions:
This is heavy duty bear country. Make lots of noise as you hike! Take plenty of water as the mountain is dry after the first 1/2 mile. If you cache with 4-legged friends, bring water for them too. This is a seldom travelled trail. Plan accordingly. Finally, this mountain can be very confusing if it is foggy, which is quite common. Pay attention to landmarks and your GPS!
