Geocache Description:

A short walk down (and then back up) the original Military Trail that served the Naval Establishments at Penetanguishene.

The Naval Establishments came about as a result of the War of 1812. After the war, there was concern about the vulnerability of York to invasion from the North. Penetanguishene harbour was seen as a strategically important for a naval base. In 1817 the Naval Establishments opened and became the permanent home to two warships. Today you can visit the reconstructed Establishments at Discovery Harbour.
Of course, a supply line with York was a necessity and this road was the results. This section is one of the few, if only, pieces of Old Penetanguishene Road which gives an idea of the isolation and difficulties that this region represented for the sailors. The old Military Road is not the section that goes straight down the hill, but rather is the section that this cache is on that curves down the hill, crosses the straight road and curves again.

This cache should give you an appreciation of the hardships of life that living at the Establishments meant in 1817.

April 17, 2008: The original cache hiding mechanism was found to be destroyed and the hiding spot was now being used by some animal so cache moved to a location very nearby and coordinates updated. No longer winter available.
