Geocache Description:

Okanagan Lake Floating Bridge

The cache "All Locked Up" (GC13BQF) has been archived due to the difficulty keeping the code caches operating.

You will need a pencil to sign the log.

The time for the old bridge has come, all that remains are the concrete pilings for the old lift span. Soon these will be demolished as well, left to the watery grave. Here are some quick facts about the old Okanagan Lake bridge.

1. The total length of the structure from shore to shore was 7/8 of a mile.
2. The pontoon section of the bridge were 2100 feet in length. Most pontoons are 50 feet wide and 15 feet in depth, being submerged about 8 feet.
3. Ten pontoons of 200 feet in length and two end pontoons of 50 feet are connected in a continuous unit, 2100 feet in total length.
4. The lift span is 265 feet long. It could be raised to provide 60 feet of vertical clearance.
5. Each pontoon had two anchors, one on each side, for a total of 24 anchors. There is one on display outside the Tourist info center downtown.
6. Each anchor weighs 70 tons, and is embedded 25 feet into the lake bottom.
7. Okanagan Lake Bridge was opened July 19, 1958. It was operated as a toll bridge until April 1, 1963.
8. This bridge was the only structure of its kind in Canada, and one of only a few of its kind in the world.
9. The new Bennett bridge opened to the public Sunday, May 25, 2008.

I suggest parking off Campbell road to access it. You can't see the cache container from the road.
