SQ SHEARER CEMETERY Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

-DeRock-: Greetings,

While Geocaching.com would like to continue to hold the location for you, doing so blocks other cachers from placing caches in the area. This cache has been out of commission for a period of time exceeding what is reasonable. Since there has been no update with maintenance plans from the cache owner I regretfully must archive it.

If you are able to get out and replace the cache, simply drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. I will be more than happy to take a look at it to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting. If not, please pick up any remaining pieces/parts of the cache before they become geolitter.

Thank you,

-DeRock-

Geocache Description:

“ Michigan Spirit Quest”

A Spirit Quest in Plymouth Twp in the little known and long since abandoned Shearer Cemetery. The MICHIGAN SPIRIT QUEST series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. The cemetery is named after members of the Shearer family although they are not the only families located at this cemetery. A complete listing of those buried at this cemetery can be found here. In 1956 some remains were removed and re-interred at Riverside Cemetery also in Plymouth. At one point there was even a brick mausoleum on the grounds but the cemetery was abandoned during the depression in the early 1930's. Recently the cemetery has received some attention and care after all these years of neglect. Some students from Salem HS have taken this on as a school project. Many of the trees were cut and cleared and the garbage cleaned up. The Boy Scouts also recently did some cleaning and errected 2 new signs and a bench as well. There is parking on the shoulder on both sides of North Territorial. This should be easy enough to find for someone looking but not easy enough for the occasional muggle that is cleaning up the cemetery and a great one for Cache in Trash out. Be sure to check out John Tibbit's home from 1827, still standing a 1/2 mile to the west. John Tibbits was the first white land owner in Plymouth Township and was also buried here.
