Geocache Description:

Very beautiful place. It's worth to visit!

Pavlovsk is one of the former royal residencies situated 32 km south of St Petersburg. It was built in the late XVIII century for Paul I and called by his name. The residence was founded in 1777. It served as the main royal residence in the reign of Paul I; after Paul’s death it belonged to his widow and remained a private property of the royal family until Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.
During WWII Pavlovsk was under Nazi occupation. The palace building was destroyed , but the great part of the exhibits had been evacuated or hidden, so after the war they managed to restore the palace completely.
Pavlovsk is 7 km away from Pushkin (another formal royal residence) The first Russian railway road was constructed in 1837 to connect St Petersburg with these two residences.
Beside the railway station, the Kursaal building was put up (architect Shtakenschneider) as a waiting room for the passengers. Many celebrated singers and composers, both Russian and foreign performed in the Kursaal building; thus, the outstanding Austrian composer Johann Strauss conducted an orchestra there for a few seasons. The original buildings of the Kursaal and the railway station were destroyed during WWII.
The park of Pavlovsk covers an area of more than 600 hectares (1,500 acres), making it one of the largest landscape park in Europe. It was laid out in the 1780s to a design by Charles Cameron. In the 1790s, architect Brenna added some geometrically planned sections to the park. Some big “landscape” sections were then added by a group of architects such as Pietro Gonzaga, Voronikhin, Rossi.
One of the things designed by Rossi is the entrance Cast Iron Gate to Pavlovsk shaped as a colonnade crowned by the double-headed eagle (1826).
