MOUNT GAMBIER COURTHOUSE
It's long been a potent symbol of law and order from the very early
days of Mt Gambier. The historic Courthouse was opened in 1865 and
the museum tells the story of the early days of the criminal
justice system when justice was often swift and at times, a little
brutal. From the empty courtroom a doorway leads into the adjoining
gallery. Here staff sell a range of arts and crafts with the money
going back into the gallery's coffers. But does it? For some time
now suspicions have focussed on the gallery's manager. For the sake
of today's exercise we'll call him Udderchaos .
"Silence in the Court. All stand".
In here you need to suspend belief just a little, the wigs are a
little outlandish and the judge, well he lacks a certain gravitas,
but here everyone gets in on the act.
"Would you escort the prisoner to the witness box?"
"State your name and address".
"I'm Udderchaos of SECS, Mt Gambier".
"This is the standard procedure for those entering the historic Mt
Gambier courthouse for a mock trial. In this case, a staff member
is under the threat of jail for the misappropriation of funds from
the gallery next door. A serious matter, even if these participants
don't think so".
Soon the Mount's top legal team has Udderchaos on the ropes. Recent
takings from the till have paid for his recent summer vacation in
Pt MacDonell. And as our quirkey QC steps in for the kill, it seems
this top silk doesn't have the silkiest of tongues.
"What did you do with the money?"
"What?".
"I spend it on Caching and Beer?"
"What about Mrs Udderchaos, spend any money on her".
"Umm I was Drunk!!".
"A drunken skunk, lowlife if ever Ive met one. And I put it to you
that every time you come home you are drunk?"
"Your Honour, I would submit that if a man had Geocaching in his
veins and a beer in his hand he would never come home".
"Oh, objection your honour".
Soon what started as slapstick descends into farce, but
not before Udderchaos gives up the game.
"How am I supposed to run This years event?"
"How do you normally fund such an event?"
"With the money that I take, I borrow".
"Oh, oh, oh". "I borrow".
Justice here may be cheap, but at least it's quick, as the
judge re-enters the court to pass sentence.
"I have considered this matter and I find the defendant guilty
and you are sentenced to 5 years jail for overacting and given the
NAGA Award".
"Five years…ah".
Given this display it should have been 10 years. It's all
part of the hijinx available to all at the historic Mt Gambier
Courthouse. The gallery staff next door has a range of scenarios for
you to act out. Meanwhile the gallery is open daily from 11.00am to
3.00pm.
That is one thing you can do at the courthouse but another is to
gather information for a cache!!and here it is below.
The starting co-ordinates will bring you to a few plaques and info
board outside to help you gather info about the courthouse. The
