Killone (Cill Eoin, the church of St. John the Baptist) convent was probably founded around 1189, by Donal mor O’Brien, but could possibly be older. It was founded as a Nunnery, and it provided many services to the surrounding community. Many of the abbesses are know to be of the O’Brien family.
In a grove on the shore of the lake, to the due east of the convent, lie the quaint pretty well, altar, and bathing tank, once the scene of a far-famed “pattern.” “Rounds” are still made there each June, but, though the piety still remains, the dissipation has been stopped, and with it the merrymaking. The altar bears an inscription on its north side:
“THIS ALTAR WAS¦BUILT BY ANTHONY ¦ROCH, MERCHANT ¦FROM ENNIS ¦1731 I.H.S.”
Killone lake is supposedly the abode of a mermaid who used to swim up a small brook and steal wine from either the crypt beneath the church or the cellar of Newhall. She was stabbed by a butler of the O'Briens, or shot by one of the "Black" MacDonnells, but managed to drag herself back into the lake and every forty years or so the lake is supposed to turn blood red.
This Cache is a Multi Cache, the coordinates for the second leg can be found in the logbook of the first cache.
